The 2011 Carbon Disclosure Project South Africa JSE 100 Report revealed a high response rate of 83%. South Africa came second, after Europe, in terms of the amount of companies that participated in voluntary disclosure, out of the 60 countries that participated in the survey. This alone signifies how seriously the South African business community is about shifting to a low carbon economy.
In the report, Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa, commented that ‘The various indicators of exponential improvement in not only the response rate, but the improving
quality and scope of data, rising levels of strategic importance given to this process and the increasing refinement in the identification of risks and opportunities, are all signs of the progressive significance that companies are attaching to the impacts of climate change.’
One has to only take a look at the results of the 2011 Carbon Disclosure Project in order to see the momentum disclosure has gained in South Africa. As shown below, the top five South African emitters have shown little progress in reducing their global emissions. Although these companies have implemented mitigation measures - only one company, BHP Biliton, has reduced its emissions steadily since 2009. All of the other four companies’ emissions have increased over the last three years.

South Africa also had the highest proportion of companies identifying climate driven risks and opportunities out of all countries participating in the CDP. Only two out of the 78 responding companies identified no risks, and five companies identified no opportunities. The following graphs show the results for South African companies:

Companies have agreed that The Carbon Disclosure Project has had transformational value in improving efficiencies, data gathering, shaping business opportunities and improving competitiveness. It is therefore in the interest for companies to get involved in this initiative.
Global Carbon Exchange assists companies in registering with the CDP, walking them through the data gathering and reporting process – which can often be an arduous task. The clients we helped with disclosure in 2011 faired very well, and we hope to increase our performance in 2012.
